Social activist Kip Tiernan opened Rosie's Place, the nation's first homeless shelter for women, in Boston during a time when society thought women didn't experience homelessness. Growing up in the Great Depression, she was taught generosity by her Granny, and spent the rest of her life trying to find a way to make sure women who had hit hard times could have a safe place to stay and a warm meal to eat
